What is trenchless sewer repair?

Trenchless sewer repair refers to a group of techniques that fix or replace damaged sewer lines from inside the pipe or through minimal excavation, avoiding the need to dig up yards, driveways, and streets. The two most common methods are pipe lining and pipe bursting.

In pipe lining, a flexible tube coated with epoxy resin is inserted into the damaged pipe and inflated or pulled into place, hardening to form a new pipe wall inside the old one. This works well for cracks, corrosion, and root intrusion without removing the old pipe. Pipe bursting, by contrast, breaks apart the damaged line from inside while simultaneously pulling a new pipe into the void left behind, effectively replacing it in one pass.

These methods differ sharply from traditional dig-and-replace excavation, which requires cutting through pavement, removing soil, and then replacing the section of pipe in an open trench. Trenchless work minimizes landscape disruption, reduces labor time, and eliminates restoration costs for driveways and lawns. It works well for lines deep underground or beneath structures where digging is impractical or impossible.

A plumber performing trenchless work typically uses a camera to inspect the line first, then chooses the best method based on the damage type and pipe material. Not all sewer problems qualify for trenchless repair, but when they do, the approach can save homeowners significant cost and headache.
