What is a water heater TPR valve?

A temperature and pressure relief (TPR) valve is a safety device on a water heater tank that automatically opens to release hot water when internal pressure or temperature becomes dangerously high.

A TPR valve, or temperature and pressure relief valve, sits at the top or upper side of a water heater tank and serves as a critical safety mechanism. When the water temperature inside the tank climbs above 210 degrees Fahrenheit or the pressure exceeds 150 pounds per square inch (PSI), the valve opens automatically to discharge excess hot water. This prevents the tank from building dangerous pressure that could cause rupture or explosion.

The valve operates independently, without electricity or moving parts you control. If your water heater's thermostat fails or a heating element malfunctions, the TPR valve steps in as a backup safety device. Most building codes require these valves on every tank-type water heater.

You will notice a small pipe running from the valve downward to the floor or to a nearby drain. This discharge pipe carries the released hot water safely away so scalding water does not spray onto you or nearby areas. If you see water dripping or flowing from this pipe, it signals that the valve is working (responding to high temperature or pressure) or that the valve itself may be worn and needs replacement by a licensed plumber.

A TPR valve typically lasts 3 to 10 years depending on water quality and usage. Many plumbers in the Greater Hartford area recommend testing and replacing these valves as part of routine water heater maintenance to keep your system functioning safely.
