What is pipe bursting?

Pipe bursting replaces damaged sewer lines without the need for full excavation of yards or roads. A specialized bursting head is inserted into the old pipe from an access pit and pulled through the line using a cable or pneumatic winch. As the head moves forward, it fractures the deteriorated pipe outward against the surrounding soil, creating space for new PVC, HDPE, or other replacement pipe to be fed through behind it. The process leaves the old pipe material in the ground while the new line occupies the same path.

This method works best for sewer lines that have collapsed, cracked, or become severely corroded. It avoids the massive excavation required by traditional pipe replacement, which can mean digging up driveways, streets, and landscaping. Because pipe bursting requires only entry and exit pits rather than a continuous trench, homeowners and municipalities can maintain site access and minimize disruption. The technique works on straight runs and slight bends, though complex bends or Y-shaped junctions may require alternative approaches.
