What is an expansion tank?
A small tank installed on a closed water heating system that absorbs excess pressure created when water expands as it heats, working in tandem with a pressure relief valve to protect the system from damage.
An expansion tank is a small vessel mounted on a hot water supply line that accommodates the pressure buildup created when water heats and expands inside a closed system. Unlike open systems that can vent excess water to the atmosphere, closed systems (which include most modern homes with municipal water and a check valve) have nowhere for that expanded water to go, so pressure rises as temperature increases. The expansion tank provides a space for that extra volume, keeping pressure within safe limits.
The tank typically contains a flexible bladder or diaphragm that separates water from a small air chamber. As heated water enters the tank, it compresses the air, then pushes back when the water cools and contracts. This pressure buffering prevents excessive strain on pipes, water heaters, and fixtures. Most Hartford-area plumbers install expansion tanks alongside a pressure relief valve (PRV). The PRV acts as a safety backup, opening if pressure exceeds the tank's capacity. Connecticut state plumbing code and many local ordinances now require an expansion tank whenever a check valve or backflow preventer is installed on the incoming water line, making it a standard part of safe water heater installation and maintenance. Without adequate expansion space, closed-system water heaters face premature failure and potential leaks from sustained high pressure.
