What is an ejector pump?

An ejector pump is a mechanical device that forces sewage and wastewater from below-grade plumbing fixtures upward to the main sewer line or septic system.

An ejector pump handles wastewater from fixtures installed below the grade of the main sewer line. Basement bathrooms, laundry rooms, and other below-grade plumbing cannot rely on gravity alone to reach the municipal sewer or septic system, so an ejector pump creates the pressure needed to move sewage upward and out of the home. The pump sits in a sump basin and activates when wastewater accumulates to a set level, discharging the contents through a discharge pipe that runs up and out to the main sewer line.

Ejector pumps differ from sump pumps in both function and application. Sump pumps remove groundwater and rainwater intrusion from basement or crawlspace sumps. Ejector pumps are designed specifically to move raw sewage and must handle solids, odors, and corrosive waste. They require more robust construction, larger discharge pipes (typically 2 inches), and regular maintenance to prevent clogs and system failure. When a basement bathroom or wet bar cannot drain by gravity, an ejector pump becomes essential to meet plumbing code and prevent sewage backup into the home.
