What is an anode rod?
An anode rod is a magnesium or aluminum metal rod suspended inside a water heater tank that corrodes preferentially to protect the tank steel from rust.
Inside nearly every conventional water heater tank sits an anode rod, a long metal shaft made of magnesium or aluminum that serves a single purpose: to rust instead of the tank itself. The rod works through a electrochemical process where the softer, more reactive metal of the anode corrodes over time while the steel tank stays protected. This sacrificial corrosion keeps the tank from developing leaks and rust that would shorten its usable life.
As water enters the tank and sits inside, natural chemical reactions cause corrosion. The anode rod absorbs nearly all of this corrosive activity. Over several years, the rod gradually disintegrates, turning to white or gray sludge that settles at the tank bottom. Once the rod is fully consumed, corrosion shifts directly to the tank wall. At that point, the tank itself begins to deteriorate and failure is usually near.
